Common Pests – Wasps

Various types of bees and wasps present themselves as problems around structures. The threat of being stung usually outweighs the beneficial aspects of pollination or insect control they provide. Most will only sting in defense of their nest.

Mud Dauber Wasp:

Although usually black, they can vary in color. These are not aggressive, thus rarely stings people. The mud nests are often made close to human activity, especially on porches, decks, sheds, eaves, attics, ceilings, walls and under roof overhangs.

Red Wasp/Paper Wasp:

These are mostly reddish brown to black with yellow rings and reddish areas on abdomen. The wings are reddish or amber brown. They look like yellow jackets but have longer legs and thinner bodies. These are among the most aggressive and will sting without provocation. Their presence may only be made known when they sting a person who is trimming shrubbery or cleaning the eaves of a house.

Yellowjacket:

The yellowjacket is very aggressive and is able to sting repeatedly. This poses a great danger and a disturbed nest creates an attacking swarm. They are unusual because they will feed on human food, especially sweets and meat. They are identified by the alternating yellow and black or white and black makings on the abdomen.

Quick Tips to Avoid Wasps:

  • Don’t use perfume.
  • Don’t go barefoot in clover or flowing ground covers.
  • Avoid brightly colored clothing.
  • Stay calm if a wasp checks you out; swatting makes them mad!
  • Wear insect repellent.
