Mosquitoes come out in full force in the spring and summer in Mid-South TN. It can seem impossible to avoid mosquito bites, but believe it or not, there are some things you can do to help avoid them.
Letโs start with a few basic ideas that can help make sure youโre rarely in the presence of swarms of mosquitoes.
- Plan outdoor fun for the middle of the day when mosquitoes are least active. Dawn and dusk are when they’re most active.
- Eliminate standing water on your property to reduce the likelihood of mosquitoes breeding nearby.
- When you do go outside, wear clothing that covers up as much of your skin as possible.
- Consider using an EPA-registered mosquito repellent if you know youโre going to be in an area with lots of mosquitoes. Be sure to talk to a pediatrician before using mosquito repellant on a child.
What Clothing Can Prevent Mosquito Bites?
Mosquitoes will bite you wherever your skin is exposed. This typically means your arms, legs, neck, feet, and hands are at the greatest risk of getting bitten. Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks tucked into pants can protect these oft-bitten areas. Of course, if this is at the height of summer, it might feel too hot to wear extra clothing. In this case, you may want to consider mosquito repellent spray.
Also, consider wearing bright colors rather than dark. Thereโs some surprising research that shows that brighter colors help repel mosquitoes.

How to Prevent Mosquito Bites on Dogs & Cats
Mosquitoes bite humans, but you may not realize they also target pets. If youโre concerned about your dog, cat, or other pet getting bitten, discuss choosing a dog or cat-safe mosquito repellent with your vet. Additionally, you might want to reconsider walking your dog at dawn or dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.ย
During the spring, you can take the proactive approach of getting mosquito treatment before they show up in massive numbers.
